Pet registrations on Al Reem Island reached 4,200 licensed dogs by June 2026, up from 2,900 the prior year, according to figures from the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority.
The increase tracks with new residential towers opening along Reem Island Boulevard and the completion of the island's extended waterfront walkway last winter. Owners now face updated rules on leash lengths and waste disposal that took effect in March, shifting daily routines for morning and evening walks.
Walkers on Al Reem have shifted from the older Al Bandar promenade to the newer 3-kilometre loop that runs past the Reem Central Park extension and connects to the Al Maryah Island bridge footpath. The Abu Dhabi Municipality added shaded rest stations and water bowls along this route in April. Nearby, the Reem Island Veterinary Clinic on Al Reem Street introduced evening drop-in hours for health checks, while the Island Veterinary Centre on Al Suwaidi Street began offering group obedience sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
These changes respond to denser housing and higher foot traffic near the two main marinas. Owners report adjusting walk times to avoid peak heat after 10 a.m., with many using the new shaded sections near the Central Park playground.
Annual licensing fees now stand at 250 dirhams per dog, with an extra 100 dirhams required for microchipping under the updated municipal code. The authority recorded a 35 percent rise in compliance checks between January and May this year. Residents can renew licences online through the Abu Dhabi government portal or at the municipality office on Al Reem Island.
Owners planning to start or expand their routines should check the latest map of permitted zones on the municipality website before heading out, particularly around construction sites near the eastern end of the island. Updated signage will appear at all entry points by the end of July.
