Abu Dhabi fitness participation hits record 60.3%, strength training surges
New survey data from the Department of Community Development shows 60.3% of residents now take part in regular physical activity, with running clubs and hybrid workouts gaining ground across the city.
How we reported this
More Abu Dhabi residents are getting active than ever before, according to the Department of Community Development’s third annual sports survey. The latest data shows 53% of residents now meet World Health Organization-recommended physical activity levels, while the overall sports participation rate has climbed to a record 60.3% in 2025, clear evidence that the emirate’s wellness push is delivering results.
Strength training and functional fitness lead the way
The 2026 GymNation Health & Fitness Report, which surveyed fitness trends across the UAE, found that strength training is the most popular workout style, chosen by 46% of respondents. HYROX and other functional training formats follow at 29%, while yoga and Pilates (28%) and hybrid classes (26%) round out the top four. Nearly half of Abu Dhabi residents, 47%, now exercise four or more times each week, a level of consistency that health officials say is key to long-term wellbeing.
Running clubs and community fitness on the rise
Social interaction and a sense of community are driving many to workout outdoors. Running clubs across Abu Dhabi have seen a surge in membership, with group runs held regularly along the Corniche, around Yas Island, and through Al Mushrif Central Park. These clubs combine structured training with a social element, making exercise feel less like a chore and more like a weekly catch-up. The trend mirrors global shifts toward community-based fitness, where accountability and camaraderie help members stick with their routines.
Recovery and wellness clubs gain traction
Beyond traditional gym workouts, Abu Dhabi’s wellness scene is expanding into recovery and longevity. Dedicated recovery studios offering cold plunges, compression therapy, and infrared saunas have opened in neighbourhoods like Al Reem Island and Saadiyat Island. Meanwhile, modern wellness clubs, spaces that blend fitness, nutrition, and mental health, are attracting a growing number of residents looking for a holistic approach to health. According to industry reports, 2026 is seeing strong demand for personalised supplements and nervous system resets, though specific local uptake figures were not available.
What’s next for Abu Dhabi fitness
With the emirate already exceeding its 2025 participation target, officials expect further growth as more residents embrace both high-intensity and recovery-focused activities. For anyone looking to join the movement, the key is to start with something that feels social and sustainable, whether that’s a weekly running club, a morning strength class, or an evening yoga session. The data suggests that consistency, not intensity, is what ultimately drives results.
