Abu Dhabi Summer Sports Championship Draws Thousands During League Off-Season
With professional leagues in off-season, residents turn to ADNEC for climate-controlled competition as national chess talents prepare for global stage.
How we reported this
As temperatures peak in the capital, the local sports calendar has shifted its focus to the indoor climate-controlled facilities at the ADNEC Centre. The Abu Dhabi Summer Sports Championship (ADSS) 2026 is currently active and running weekly sessions until August 12, according to reports sourced from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. The event provides organized access to a variety of disciplines, including football, padel, basketball, badminton, volleyball, and cricket, offering a vital outlet for local athletes while the professional clubs of the UAE Pro League remain in their seasonal break.
National Chess Stars Eye International Glory
While amateur leagues dominate the mid-summer schedule, Abu Dhabi’s elite competitive ranks have seen recent success on the national stage. Abu Dhabi Chess Club members Omran Al Hosani and Rouda Alserkal have secured UAE national chess titles, providing a significant boost to local standing ahead of the upcoming Samarkand Olympiad, as confirmed by Abu Dhabi Sports Council records. Their performances highlight the ongoing development of the club’s top-tier talent in preparation for high-stakes international competition.
These developments align with the broader objectives of the UAE National Sport Strategy 2031, which aims to increase physical activity participation and expand municipal sports infrastructure. Public interest in health-focused events remains high; the fourth Abu Dhabi Sports and Physical Activity Survey reported that physical activity participation among the population rose to 60.3% in 2025, up from 53.6% in 2024. Among these participants, satisfaction levels regarding events hosted by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council have reached 83%.
Building Toward the Autumn Calendar
The sporting infrastructure remains a cornerstone of the city’s identity, anchored by major venues like the 45,000-seat Zayed Sports City Stadium. Local clubs such as Al Jazira, Al Wahda FC, and Baniyas Club continue to serve as the primary focus for professional football fans, maintaining their competitive presence within the UAE Pro League. The city continues to leverage its status as a hub, hosting international fixtures including the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit and recurring UFC events.
Looking ahead, the sporting schedule is set to intensify as the summer concludes. The Abu Dhabi Sports Council has announced that the sixth edition of the Abu Dhabi Sports Championship for Schools & Universities will launch in October 2026. This comprehensive program will feature 19 unique sports, including new additions such as Rugby, Padel, and Wrestling, and will continue through May 2027. Additionally, cricket fans can anticipate the ninth edition of the Abu Dhabi T10, which is scheduled for November 18-30, 2026, at the Zayed Cricket Stadium.
