Abu Dhabi Arts Scene Advances With Frieze Rebrand and District Growth

The annual Abu Dhabi Art fair, launched in 2009, is being rebranded as Frieze Abu Dhabi and will be taken over by the London-based Frieze in November 2026.

Abu Dhabi's cultural calendar features established institutions alongside new facilities in the Saadiyat Cultural District. The shift in the art fair's management comes as the district expands its permanent collections and performance spaces, giving residents and visitors additional reasons to track programming at multiple sites.

Saadiyat Cultural District anchors

Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Cultural District hosts the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened in 2017, and serves as the upcoming home of the Zayed National Museum, which opened in December 2025, along with the Natural History Museum and Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Manarat Al Saadiyat functions as a community hub and gateway to the district, hosting exhibitions, talks and the Abu Dhabi Art fair from 2011 onwards. A new performing arts centre, Dar Al Funoon, is scheduled to open next to the Saadiyat Cultural District in 2030.

Established venues and traditional forms

The Cultural Foundation, opened by Sheikh Zayed in 1981, remains the most historically significant arts institution in the capital and continues to host ballet recitals, book fairs and exhibitions. Current 2026 cultural events include independent UAE music at The Arts Centre at NYU Abu Dhabi and classical ballet at the Cultural Foundation. Key traditional performing arts include Al-Ayyala, a troupe performance with bamboo canes, Al-Azi, a UNESCO-listed poetic performance, and Al-Taghrooda, improvised Bedouin poetry.
