Hundreds of Abu Dhabi residents will lace up their trainers this July as the capital’s summer schedule of community fun runs, charity walks and outdoor fitness activities gets underway. Organisers confirmed at least four major public events—ranging from 3K family runs to group Zumba sessions at Reem Central Park—are set to draw thousands looking to keep active despite the rising heat.
Event organisers say this resurgent public interest comes at a crucial moment for the city. With temperatures consistently above 40°C this month and officials warning against solitary high-intensity training outdoors after 9am, group events offer a safer, more motivating way to exercise. Community fitness gatherings also encourage a wider demographic—families, newcomers, and those new to regular movement—to participate without pressure, helping sustain Abu Dhabi’s active wellness culture through the hottest part of the year.
This week, registration opened for the ever-popular Yas Mall Indoor Run, scheduled for Friday, 19 July. The course loops throughout the cooled concourses of Yas Mall, allowing runners and walkers to complete 2.5km or 5km distances away from the sun. The event, run in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, regularly sells out its 800 free spots within days, according to the council’s spokesman. Over on Al Reem Island, the Active Parks programme is expanding with sunset group yoga and strength classes every Saturday evening at Reem Central Park, supported by Mubadala Health.
Fitness is also being put in service of a cause this month. The Emirates Red Crescent is organising the ‘Steps for Hope’ charity walk at Al Hudayriyat Leisure & Entertainment District on 26 July. Participants pay a registration fee of AED 55—with proceeds funding summer school supplies for disadvantaged children—and can choose between 3km and 7km options along the island’s cycling and walking tracks.
The numbers point to growing engagement. According to the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, participation in public wellness events rose to more than 64,000 last year, up from 51,300 in 2022. Entry fees remain broadly accessible: tickets to the Yas Mall run start at AED 50 for adults and AED 25 for children under 12, while most Active Parks outdoor sessions are free, funded by the government to improve citywide activity rates. Many events include options for beginners and families—organisers say last season saw a 40% increase in group or child entries compared to 2022 figures.
Registration for the key events—Yas Mall Indoor Run, Steps for Hope, and Active Parks sessions—can be completed online through the official Abu Dhabi Sports Council website or the Active Parks portal. Most events have capped numbers and tend to fill up quickly. Organisers recommend signing up one to two weeks in advance and arriving early on event days to avoid the last-minute rush for bib pickup or yoga mats. As Abu Dhabi’s summer kicks into peak, the message from the city’s fitness organisers is clear: bring water, start early, and join in. Working out together, residents say, is the best way to keep healthy—and keep spirits up—until the weather turns cooler again.
