Pet owners and fitness fans alike are discovering that some of Abu Dhabi’s best green spaces double as dog havens and energetic social hubs.

Saturday mornings at Umm Al Emarat Park now have a distinct soundtrack: the happy yelps of off-leash dogs mixing with the low thump of running shoes. As summer’s early light fills Al Mushrif, dozens of pet owners gather at the capital’s largest, most dog-welcoming park—not just for canine companionship, but to sweat and socialize alongside their pets.
It’s a scene repeated across Abu Dhabi, as city residents embrace an active outdoor culture that blurs the line between fitness, socialising, and pet-friendly living. With more than 27% of households in the capital owning a dog, according to the 2025 UAE Pet Ownership Survey, public spaces catering to both canine needs and fitness-minded owners have started to flourish. The rise in dog-walking meetups and outdoor fitness groups has transformed select parks into true community wellness engines at a time when the city is keen to promote healthy lifestyles for all ages.
Umm Al Emarat Park on 15th Street may be the best-known, but it’s far from the only dog-friendly fitness destination in Abu Dhabi. In Khalifa City, K9 Central—a private dog park opened in 2024 on Street 22—hosts weekend agility sessions and dog-friendly circuit classes that draw fitness groups from across the city. On Reem Island, the Beach Dog Park next to Cove Beach has become a sunset hotspot for running clubs and yoga-in-the-park gatherings, where leashed pets are as much a part of the routine as stretch bands and yoga mats.
“We get 50-70 participants at our Saturday Bootcamps, and at least a third bring their dogs,” said Riya S., who organizes outdoor HIIT sessions through Abu Dhabi Active Families. Entry is Dhs10 at Umm Al Emarat on weekends, while K9 Central charges Dhs45 per two-hour session, including agility equipment.
Facilities play a role, too. Umm Al Emarat offers shaded jogging trails, paw-friendly water fountains, and fully-fenced dog yards. The Corniche Dog Exercise Area, upgraded in 2025, added rubberized ground (easy on paws and runners’ knees) plus a dog-wash station, attracting more group runs followed by puppy play.
City data shows a trend: from 2023 to 2025, public usage of Abu Dhabi’s major parks jumped 22%, with fitness hours between 5am and 9am—prime dog-walking time—accounting for much of that rise. According to the Department of Community Development, group memberships for outdoor fitness clubs with dog-friendly policies have nearly doubled over the last two years, reflecting a broader shift toward pet-integrated wellness routines.
For many, the draw is more than just exercise. “I met my closest friends at the dog run last Eid,” said Aisha M., an Al Bateen resident and regular at Umm Al Emarat’s Sunday group walks. “We schedule our workouts together, then let the dogs play.”
Civic groups have taken note. In May 2026, the Abu Dhabi Municipality launched the Dog Social Fitness Programme—a series of free park workouts and educational sessions on responsible pet ownership in Zayed Sports City Park and Al Hudayriat Island. The next round starts July 16 and is open to all registered dog owners (registration through the TAMM app is required).
Summer’s heat means most dog-friendly groups gather before 8am or after sunset. Most public parks require dogs to be leashed outside fenced run areas; K9 Central and Beach Dog Park allow off-leash play in designated spots. Bring water for both you and your pet, and keep a supply of waste bags handy—parks can fine littering up to Dhs500. Annual passes at Umm Al Emarat Park are Dhs250, with daily entries also available.
With demand climbing, expect to see more outdoor classes, group runs, and even dog-friendly mindfulness workshops popping up in Abu Dhabi’s parks over the coming year. For urbanites with four-legged fitness partners, this may be the city’s most sociable wellness trend yet.
