From Al Khalidiya Park to Reem Central, Abu Dhabi’s green spaces are redefining inclusive fitness for humans — and their four-legged companions.

Weekend mornings at Al Khalidiya Park are looking a little livelier these days. Joggers orbit the clay track, while dogs of every size and shape chase frisbees or watch their owners master downward dog on the shaded yoga lawns. Over the last year, Abu Dhabi’s multispecies approach to wellness – with dog-friendly parks doubling as social fitness spots – has taken off as temperatures and interest in outdoor recreation both climb.
Here’s why: Summer’s arrival means earlier exercise, but finding safe, welcoming spaces for both pets and people can be tricky in a city where pet ownership is on the rise. The emirate registered nearly 12,000 licensed dogs last year (Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, 2025), and residents say the social benefits of group outings — for themselves and their pets — are equally prized.
Some parks are setting a new standard. At Al Khalidiya Park in the heart of Khalidiya, updated signage and a discreet waste bin system — introduced in October 2025 — have encouraged more visitors to bring their pets without disrupting the mood for families or solo exercisers. Early risers gather for circuit sessions organised through the local group Fit with Fido, which runs four-times-weekly bootcamps at Khalidiya and Mushrif Central Park. Meanwhile, at Reem Central Park on Al Reem Island, the grassy promenades become a runway for leashed dogs and their sporty owners. The park’s shaded obstacle course, added last spring, now draws a blend of CrossFit fans, dog walkers and giggling children on scooters every morning before the heat sets in.
Fitbit UAE, a private wellness initiative, tracks an average of 7,800 daily steps logged at Reem Central’s open space between October and March — an increase of 20% over pre-pandemic numbers, according to company data shared with The Daily Abu Dhabi. The park's cafe, Soulful by the Canal, started allowing pets in its courtyard last November and saw a 35% uptick in morning business. "It’s become a tradition: an hour’s walk with our Saluki, then iced coffee and a chat while the dogs mingle," said Malika, a Reem Island resident and regular at the park’s weekend yoga class.
The demand for all-in-one wellness venues is evident in the data. Local veterinary clinics report a 15% year-on-year increase in vaccinated new puppies, with Dr. Haitham Jaber of Pet Pavilion noting more queries about safe exercise spaces. The Abu Dhabi Municipality confirmed it upgraded leash and waste disposal facilities in six additional city parks in 2026, spending AED 3.2 million on landscaping modifications to accommodate pet-friendly zones. A monthly combo fitness-and-dog social hosted by Dog City Abu Dhabi draws an average of 60 people and 52 dogs according to April’s sign-in sheet. Attendance is up by 40% over last year, organisers say.
Membership in Fit with Fido costs AED 100 per month, while general park access remains free. With these low barriers, the main constraint is often the summer heat: sessions now begin at 6 a.m., and most groups migrate indoors by mid-morning. Yet community momentum is growing. Urban planners working with Zayed City’s new green belt say that at least two dog-friendly fitness groves are slated for completion by January 2027.
Residents interested in joining the trend can visit Al Khalidiya or Reem Central Park for early-morning walks or join upcoming fitness social events through Dog City’s website. The emirate’s Department of Municipalities recommends checking current rules at each park and always carrying water for pets. As more parks introduce paw-welcoming policies and shared play spaces, Abu Dhabi’s approach is quietly redefining wellness as a pursuit that welcomes all – on two legs or four.
