Abu Dhabi residents seeking ways to keep fit in the capital’s summer mornings are flocking to the emirate’s network of walking trails, with routes now clearly rated by length and challenge for all ages and abilities.
The surge in interest comes as the National Center of Meteorology recorded a steamy July week, prompting many to prioritise outdoor activities early in the day or towards sunset. With Abu Dhabi’s active living culture, well-designed public parks and green corridors are emerging as safe refuges for residents mindful of both health and weather. City authorities, including the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), have steadily expanded dedicated walking loops and natural trails over the past three years to encourage year-round activity.
Standouts on the city’s walking scene include the sweeping tracks on Al Hudayriat Island and the popular Al Reem Central Park. Al Hudayriat’s Heritage Trail, stretching 5 kilometers along the mangroves, attracts regulars with its moderate inclines and sweeping bridge views. Panels mark sections as easy, moderate, and challenging based on gradient and sun exposure. Over at Al Reem Central Park on Shams Abu Dhabi, two brightly marked circuits – a 2km inner loop and a 5km outer loop – cater to both beginners and seasoned endurance walkers. The neighbourhood also boasts a series of shaded connectors reaching the waterfront promenade by Mangrove National Park.
Al Bateen Beach Park offers a leisurely 3.2km seaside walkway that’s nearly flat, making it a favourite for casual evening strolls and families with young children. For those seeking more challenging terrain, Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, on the outskirts of the city, features a 4km nature trail with some unpaved, gravelly patches – a choice for hikers who want to spot flamingoes and salt marshes while getting a mild cardio challenge.
According to DMT mapping data, Abu Dhabi now counts over 50 kilometers of publicly accessible walking trails. Park entry remains free at most sites, while some like Al Wathba Wetland require online pre-registration for visitor numbers. Abu Dhabi Sports Council’s ‘365 Days of Activity’ campaign this year added new guided walks and group events on Friday mornings, with participation up by 18% compared to 2024. Early-morning walkers were spotted by this reporter at Mushrif Central Park’s 1.35km loop (off 15th Street), which posts difficulty ratings at each entrance: green for ‘easy’, blue for ‘moderate’, and orange for ‘challenging’, borrowed from international trail grading systems.
Trail amenities vary: Most central parks have filtered water stations and shaded seating every 500 metres, but further afield, routes like Al Wathba require walkers to bring their own provisions. Bicycles and e-scooters are permitted on certain sections, though signs at Al Reem and Hudayriat keep walkers and wheeled users separated for safety.
Abu Dhabi authorities say more digital integration is coming. This autumn, the DMT will launch an updated mobile app mapping all city trails, with live updates on weather, special events, and accessibility notes for strollers or people with limited mobility.
For now, the key advice is simple: Start early, bring water, and choose a trail that matches your level. Whether chasing step goals in Al Bateen or training for a longer hike at Al Hudayriat or Wathba, Abu Dhabi’s network offers options for novices and veterans alike. Residents can check the Active Parks digital board at Corniche Park or online via Tamouh’s community portal for trail guides, group events, and up-to-date safety tips. With more shaded connectors and digital resources on the way, summer fitness in the capital is set to become safer and more accessible this year.
