Abu Dhabi residents have stepped up use of unmarked trails inside the Eastern Mangroves Preserve and the Al Wathba reserve since the start of June, with local running clubs logging 40 percent more participants on weekday mornings compared with the same period last year.
The change aligns with the Abu Dhabi Department of Health's summer wellness push, which highlights shaded outdoor routes as safer options when daytime temperatures climb above 42 degrees. Residents cite shorter commute times and fewer tour buses as reasons they now favour these spots over the Corniche promenade or Saadiyat Island boardwalks.
One route begins at the small car park on Dhow Road behind the Eastern Mangroves hotel cluster and follows a 3.2-kilometre loop through mangrove channels that only locals on foot reach before 7 a.m. Another starts at the gated service road off Al Wathba Road, 25 minutes south of the city centre, where a 4.8-kilometre flat path circles the seasonal lake and ends at the old falcon hospital buildings now used for community yoga sessions on Fridays.
Both locations sit inside protected zones managed by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, which opened limited public access in 2023 but has kept signage minimal to protect breeding bird colonies.
Environment Agency figures released last month show 2,150 monthly permits issued for the Eastern Mangroves trail in the first half of 2026, up from 1,480 in the same months of 2025. Entry remains free with an online registration, though organised groups charge 35 AED per session to cover water stations and first-aid cover.
Residents planning to try either route should register through the Environment Agency website at least 24 hours ahead, carry at least one litre of water per person, and start before sunrise to finish before heat builds. Updated trail maps appear each Sunday on the agency's social channels.
