Abu Dhabi Municipality began free senior fitness sessions on July 1 across five public parks, with classes running three mornings a week for groups of up to 30 participants each.
The programs address rising demand from the emirate’s older population, where adults over 60 now make up 12 percent of residents and many seek low-cost ways to stay active amid summer heat that often exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. Local health data shows one in three seniors reports limited mobility, prompting the council to expand outdoor options before the hottest weeks arrive.
Classes take place at Corniche Park near the breakwater and at Khalifa Park along 25th Street, with sessions led by certified trainers from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. Participants meet at 7 a.m. for balance and strength routines that last 45 minutes, followed by water and shaded rest areas supplied by the municipality. Additional slots opened at Al Raha Gardens Community Centre on July 8 to reach residents in the eastern districts.
Registration occurs through the municipality’s online portal or at on-site desks, with no fees required and equipment such as resistance bands provided on arrival. The council reports 420 seniors have signed up in the first nine days, exceeding the initial target of 300 for the July rollout.
Anyone aged 60 or older can check availability on the Abu Dhabi Municipality website or call the wellness hotline at 800 555 before heading to a site. New participants receive a simple health screening form to complete on their first visit, after which they can attend any scheduled class without further paperwork.
